New York, New York. A city so nice they named it twice. As a native, I would agree that the old adage is mostly true, but there are certainly better times than others to pay the Big Apple a visit. September is one of the sweeter months, when the frenzied, frazzled summer crowds begin to thin and the sweltering, steamy temperatures begin to cool. Fashion Week kicks off just after Labor Day, which serves as the unofficial reunion for the creative crowds who spend their summers gallivanting throughout Europe and luxuriating on the eastern shores of Long Island.
It’s also the time when the hot new restaurants open with a slew of lavish fashion week soirées that draw the who’s who of the industry. This month, the long-awaited Four Seasons Restaurant is reopening in its new location. By day, power players from midtown investment funds, the media and celebrities lunch side-by-side. By night, one glittered gala after another will help boast this institution’s long-awaited return as it shouts from the rooftops, “we’re back!”
Another anxiously anticipated opening and fashionista favorite is 10 Corso Como, an off-shoot of the original quirky concept store in Milan. With a location in the newly redeveloped South Street Seaport area, this is one shopping destination that should not be overlooked. When it comes to sartorial curations, another must-see is The Webster boutique in Soho. Having firmly planted its roots in Miami with one of the most carefully selected displays of exclusive luxe goodies, Laure Hériard Dubreuil opened her Soho outpost in the most beautiful six-story cast-iron building on Greene Street last year. If the clothes, shoes and handbags don’t impress you, sneak up to the rooftop terrace to get a closer glimpse of the neighboring buildings’ architecture. When in New York, you must always remember to look up. Or, in this case, across the cobblestoned streets.
Although the city has a revolving door of openings throughout the year, every New Yorker has a handful of tried and true spots that will always securely remain in their night-on-the-town arsenal. Indochine, for instance, is an iconic Fashion Week restaurant that opened in 1984 and is still the scene to be seen for models, editors and socials alike. On a more low-key occasion, one can never go wrong with a stop at one of the three Sant Ambroeus locations throughout town. Whether you are an uptown girl (on Madison Ave.), living your best Carrie Bradshaw life (in the West Village) or you’re a cool kid downtown (in Soho), there is a spot for you, each with a separate (yet equally chic) vibe.
With talks of shopping, sipping and savoring, I would be remiss not to mention some spots to drop in for an afternoon pick-me-up if you find yourself exploring mid-day. No matter the vice, whether sugar or spice, uptown’s quaint Via Quadronno serves everything nice. It’s a charming spot that just about everyone in New York has either heard of or frequented, even those who refuse to walk or ride anywhere above 14th Street (that’s a thing in New York). If you find yourself downtown, Laduree Soho and its charming outdoor patio will transport you to a quaint Parisian café, and let’s be honest, who can resist those macarons? La Mercerie, also at home in Soho, is one of the newer kids on the block. Part Roman and Williams Guild design store, part café and bakery, what makes this rustically elegant eatery so unique is that everything from the porcelain you eat off of to the furniture you sit on is for sale, literally allowing you to shop while you eat. That’s what I call multitasking.

Once your belly is full and your wallet is empty, if you’re looking to soak in some culture, it’s worth taking a quick walk through The Frick Collection on the Upper East Side. Not only is the collection housed in one of the most beautiful and rare standalone mansions in the city, the museum also happens to exhibit some of the most impressive artworks in the world, that belonged to Henry Clay Frick.

Once you step through the doors, you feel remarkably as though you’ve just stepped into the Golden Age of the 1920s. After your art fix, take a leisurely stroll up to Bemelman’s Bar in the Carlyle hotel for some pre-dinner cocktails, an oldie but a goodie. Who knows, while you’re there you may bump into Billy Joel, who is known to frequent this New York institution, playing Uptown Girl on the piano.
If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, take a car or a train to the newly opened Dumbo House in Brooklyn (for Soho House members only). For one of the most memorable views of Manhattan, skip the lines at One World Trade, 30 Rock and the Empire State Building and head to the Dumbo House rooftop with a glass of vino. Exhale, and prepare for the onset of awestruck as the true beauty of a New York City sunset takes your breath away…
